Abstract | In this original collection of articles, the editors bring together scholars from various disciplines to explore the gender politics of transitional justice. Based on empirical research, the volume explores strategies and measures of dealing with the legacy of massive human rights abuses from various gender perspectives including retributive and gender justice, the potentials and limits of agency, and the correlation between transitional justice and social change for women and men. Analyzing how countries like Rwanda, South Africa, Cambodia, East Timor, Columbia, Chile and Germany come to terms with their violent pasts, the authors take a broader view on the gendered impact of transitional justice by incorporating, yet going beyond, a focus on sexualised violence against women. They investigate other expressions of gendered injustices, such as structural inequalities, the analysis of masculinities and the rights of sexual minorities. |
