Abstract

This article investigates one aspect of the demobilization policy in post-1945 West Germany: to ressert the male authority of German men. It isĀ  focusing on social polcy and cultural representation concerning the relationshsip and offspring of white German women and African-American GIs. The authors interest is twofold: first, to illuminate the particular ways that discourses of race figured in the "remasculinization" of postwar West Germany; and second, to sketch briefly the prescriptive nature and political function of this "new German man."
