Abstract

This volume presents a thorough history of the French army in Africa and of the native peoples of Africa who came into contact with the French. The work analyzes the functioning of the French military system in Africa, as well as the considerable military power devoted to development projects of the state. Special attention is paid to the native African soldiers attached to the French army and their personal ideologies and beliefs about the uniform they wore. The author also briefly contrasts the French and British colonial military systems. [modified from publisher and preface]
