Abstract

Volume II of The American Soldier deals with combat and its aftermath. It proves that attitudes are directly related to later combat performance. It studies American young men under stress, in ground and air warfare; what made them fight. It analyzes anxiety and fear, group loyalty and formal and informal social controls. In dealing with demobilization, it reveals the inside story of the point system, which, in spite of many criticisms, may have saved the country from a disastrous postwar finale." [Book jacket]
