Abstract

Within a few days of the German invasion of Belgium and France in 1914, rumors of atrocities abounded and rapidly found their way into print. Growing in intensity, they accompanied the entire two-and-a-half-month period of mobile warfare during the First War. This article by two experts of the subject explores the allied discourse on German "atrocities" and the German propaganda against it and contrasts the propaganda with German soldier's war experiences they noted in their war diaries.
