"Die Liebe sei Euer Heldentum": Geschlecht und Nation in völkischen Vereinen der Habsburgermonarchie

In this book, the author establishes that a folk-oriented German nationalism pervaded not only the German Empire, but the Hapsburg Monarchy as well. The author then argues that gender identities were defined within the German national milieu, demonstrated by tasks women were obligated to perform for the people and the nation. She examines how these discourses had an impact on politics and everyday life around 1900, but also on the social life of functionaries and politicians in German nationalist associations. By making it clear that female and male identities are created through nationalist values, the author provides important insights into the connection between gender and nation.
