Abstract

This book is the first compendium on memory in Europe after 1945 - from Spain to Russia, from Norway to Italy. It shows how the variations of memory surrounding National Socialism, Fascism, and the Holocaust have been instrumental in shaping the historical consciousness of the old continent. This overview reveals how Europeans interpreted and debated the traumatizing events of the 1930s and 1940s. In addition to similarities and differences between national cultures of remembrance, tensions between the official memory policy and the memories of individual social groups are shown. A separate chapter is devoted to the legal investigation of war crimes and crimes against humanity. [Publisher]
