Abstract

The introduction provides first an overview of the development and state of research on the subject of gender and war in political and social sciences and history. Then it discusses the understanding of the central concepts "gender," "war" and "violence" used in the handbook. And finally it describes in more detail the aims, central questions and theoretical approach of the handbook, its regional and temporal focus as well as its organization.
