Abstract

The study examines the National Socialist mobilization of German women for the "home front" during the Second World War. It focuses on the tightly meshed organizational network that served to activate women for wartime tasks and explores in particular the civilian air-raid protection – from fire-fighting to service in reception and rescue centers to deal with the consequences of flat bombings – as a female-dominated field of action. In addition, the book also examines other forms of the involvement of women in the German Volksgemeinschaft (the community of people), like aid and care services for female war victims, like war widows, bombed out women, and female evacuees were entitled.
