Abstract

Mary Seacole (1805-1881) was the mixed race daughter of a Scottish army officer and a free black woman. She was born into freedom during the era of slavery in Kingston, Jamaica. This memoir recounts Seacole's childhood, her years as a storekeeper in a Central American frontier town, and her role as a volunteer battlefield 'doctress' to British troops in the Crimean War.
