Abstract

For more than 35 years, the people of Western Sahara have been fighting for their independence and against Morocco's territorial claim to the territory. Saharawi women play a vital role in resisting and organizing daily life in refugee camps, where the majority of Sahrawi live. The analysis of the relationship between gender, national identity and conflict sheds light on the multi-dimensional construction of Saharaw womanhood, which is often at odds with the reality of women's lives. It identifies moments of women's freedom of action as well as tendencies towards possible remasculinization. [publisher]
