Abstract

This book integrates a series of literary and cultural history studies on the construction of national masculinity in the interwar Spain of the twentieth century (1914-1945). They were decisive years in the evolution of gender relations, with important changes in the dominant models of virility and femininity, and in the process of Spanish nationalization. What are the constituent elements that a social-political community chooses to represent itself in a male myth? How do gender ideologies affect their recipients, both cognitively and affectively? How does the mythical normative masculinity in the "male" violate literature? national? Can there be an alternative masculinity in this climate of homogenization? What significance do the masculine constructions of the nation and the republic have for the future itself: the civil war and the Franco dictatorship? This book tries to answer these questions.
