Abstract

The International Brigades, founded shortly after the military coup in Spain on July 17, 1936, also included 1,400 Austrian volunteers. Some 80 years after the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, this book now fills the gap in Austria's social memory and takes an interdisciplinary perspective on the war participants who came from Austria. New findings in the international reappraisal of the subject area, the opening of Russian archives, and the latest research findings on Austrian history in the 1930s and 1940s make it possible to take a new look at the topic. The memorial-political debate on the significance of the civil war in Spanish and European history includes artistic and literary processing, the contribution of women, translation and interpreting, ideological aspects within the International Brigades, or the participation of Austrians on the side of the rebellious generals.
