Abstract

Dying heroes are widely used in the visual culture of Britain around 1800. Katja Wolf analyzes the conditions of production and reception of the image motif and its gender-political significance. The worship of dying military leaders is part of a heroic culture around 1800 in the UK closely linked to the emergence of the nation and the formation of certain masculinity ideals. Staged in historical scenes, reproduced as printmaking and glorified on everyday objects, dying heroes adorned equally the private homes of wealthy Britons, the walls of public inns, and the shop windows of London's 'printshops'.
