This film explores the origins of Indian independence from British rule in the mid-19th century. Soldier Mangal Pandey develops a strong relationship with Captain John Gordon during the Anglo-Afghan Wars. Their relationship deteriorates when the British East India Company introduces new rifles that use cartridges greased with pig grease, violating the religious beliefs of Pandey and other Muslim soldiers. Pandey leads a revolt, becoming a martyr for the cause. Upon his death, Gordon joins the independence movement.
