This film explores the origins of Indian independence from British rule in the mid nineteenth century. Indian soldier Mangal Pandey develops a strong relationship with British Captain John Gordon during the Anglo-Afghan Wars. Their relationship deteriorates when the British East India Company introduces new rifles that use cartridges greased with pig grease, violating the Indian soldiers' religious beliefs. Pandey leads a revolt, becoming a martyr for the cause. Upon his death, Gordon joins the independence movement.
