In this drama set during the Russian Civil War, Klavdia Vavilova, a Red Army cavalry commissar, is waylaid by an unexpected pregnancy. She stays with a Jewish family to give birth and is softened somewhat by the experience of family life. She must ultimately decide whether to rejoin her troops or stay with her child. Based on the story V gorode Berdichev by Vassily Grossman, this film was made in 1967 but not released until 1988 for political reasons.
