Abstract

A fictionalized account of Algerian involvement in the French Resistance during World War II, Free Men follows Younes as he transitions from Paris' underground black market to the underground network helping Jews escape persecution. To avoid imprisonment after his arrest, Younes agrees to spy on fellow Muslims at the Grand Mosque. He becomes a double agent when he builds friendships there. His political awakening also includes anti-colonial sentiment brewing in Paris' Algerian community.
