Cal

Based on the 1983 novella of the same title written by Bernard MacLaverty who also wrote the script, Cal is a 1984 Irish drama film. The plot follows Cal (John Lynch), a young soldier in the Irish Republican Army, and Marcella (Helen Mirren), a Catholic war widow, who fall in love during the Irish Troubles (1968-1998). Feeling remorse for his role in the murder of her Protestant husband, Cal finds work on the farm owned by Marcella's in-laws. They temporarily find reprieve from their respective tormentors, the IRA for Cal and Marcella's extended family, before the war disrupts everything again.
