Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival and banned in China, this film offers a sprawling account of that nation's history from the Sino-Japanese War to the Cultural Revolution. Two young boys apprentice at the Peking Opera, forging a 50-year friendship tested by shifting political and cultural tides. The opera, an ancient cultural tradition, comes under attack as a capitalist, bourgeois enterprise in the late 1960s and early 1970s, testing the relationship between these now grown men.
