Director Zhang Yimou explores the theme of sacrifice in this film about the Rape of Nanking during the Sino-Japanese War. American John Miller assumes the identity of a Catholic priest to shelter young school girls from the violence outside the church walls. When the Japanese Colonel requests the presence of the school girls for a choral performance, a group of prostitutes and a young boy take their place. Miller escorts the girls out of the city.
