Abstract

A young boy's reminiscences reveal the long-standing tensions and little-known revolts leading to Indian Independence. Jhunku Roy finds himself torn between his belief in British justice and the growing revolutionary spirit in East Bengal in the early 1930s. After losing faith in his British mentor, Jhunku joins the revolt led by his school teacher to take the city of Chittagong, one of the first anti-colonial uprisings. After his release from prison in 1939, Jhunku rejoins the cause, becoming part of the peasant revolt known as Tebagha Uprising.
