Abstract

Unpopular with audiences and critics alike when it was released in 1963, The Ugly American offered a warning to the Cold-War obsessed United States as it headed toward full-scale intervention in Vietnam. Harrison MacWhite, an academic and new ambassador to a fictional southeast Asian country, sees the emerging conflict in Sarkhan as a battle between communism and democracy. His decisions on the ground exacerbate a conflict defined as a quest for self-determination and nationalism by Sarkhan's people.
