This internationally acclaimed and Oscar winning film explores corruption and the surveillance state of East Berlin in the mid-1980s. Captain Gerd Wiesler of the Stasi spies on a famous playwright and his girlfriend but becomes disillusioned when he learns the operation is to satisfy the personal desires of the Minister of Culture. Wiesler then works to hide the playwright's subversive activities, costing him  but cannot protect his girlfriend. His actions cause him to lose his position in the Stasi.
