Abstract

This internationally acclaimed and Oscar winning film explores corruption and the surveillance state of East Germany in the mid-1980s. Captain Gerd Wiesler of the secret service (Stasi) spies on a famous playwright and his girlfriend but becomes disillusioned when he learns the operation is to satisfy the personal desires of the Minister of Culture. Wiesler then works to hide the playwright's subversive activities, costing him his position in the Stasi.
