Christ Stopped at Eboli is a 1979 drama film directed by Francesco Rosi, adapted from the 1945 memoir of the same name by Carlo Levi (1902-1975). It stars Gian Maria Volonté as Levi, a political dissident under Fascism who was exiled in the rural Basilicata region in Southern Italy from 1935 to 1936. The film covers his years in exile and isolation. Noticing that local doctors are not interested in treating peasants, the painter begins to minister to their health in response to their appeals, establishing a strong relationship with the community.
